WhatsApp is taking another major step toward simplifying privacy and security for its global user base. The messaging platform has introduced passkey-encrypted chat backups, a new feature that replaces traditional password-based protection with device-level authentication such as fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen lock.
This upgrade makes securing your conversations easier and safer by removing the need to remember long passwords or 64-digit encryption keys. Instead, WhatsApp now uses your phone’s built-in biometric security to protect your chat backups with end-to-end encryption.
What Is Passkey Encryption in WhatsApp?
Previously, users could secure their chat backups with end-to-end encryption by setting up a password or storing a 64-digit encryption key manually. While effective, the process was cumbersome and prone to human error. With the new passkey system, WhatsApp integrates directly with your device’s secure hardware, offering the same strong protection with far greater convenience.
According to WhatsApp, passkeys use your existing authentication method — like a fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock code — to encrypt your backups. This means there’s no need to remember or manage any extra credentials. Your device essentially becomes the key to your private chat history.
How It Works
Once passkey backup is enabled, your phone’s authentication method will serve as the access key for your encrypted backups. When you reinstall WhatsApp or set it up on a new device, you’ll simply unlock your phone to restore your data. There’s no need to retrieve forgotten passwords or locate old encryption keys.
WhatsApp also assures users that privacy remains fully intact. Neither WhatsApp itself nor cloud storage services like Google Drive or iCloud will have access to your encrypted messages, photos, videos, or voice notes.
The company explains that “with just a tap or a glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp now applies to your chat backups as well, keeping them always safe, private, and accessible only to you.”
How to Enable Passkey-Encrypted Backups on WhatsApp
Follow these simple steps to turn on the feature:
1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
2. Tap Chats, then select Chat Backup.
3. Scroll down and enable End-to-End Encrypted Backup.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to link your biometric authentication or device screen lock.
The passkey-encrypted backup feature is currently rolling out in phases and will be available to all users on Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks and months. Once activated, it will provide a faster, smarter, and more secure way to protect your chats, media, and memories.
